My new puppy(And how to take care of Jack Russell Terriers)

I got a new puppy for my birthday last month as a gift from my boyfriend.The little pupper is a Jack Russell Terrier and she is so lively.She was ONLY 2 months old.I have always loved dogs but my mom wouldn't ever let me get one.When I saw this little angel I actually cried tears of joy.My mom of course was against it,but do you ever throw a present away? But to be honest the first few days that little angel turned into a semi-devil.At first i thought that it will be impossible to take care of her cause she was so so trouble.She would pee everywhere and would cry all day and night.The poor pupper was stressed and afraid and this was my first experience with dogs and I had no idea what was i doing and what was I supposed to do.It turns out puppies need more love and attention than babies,who would've guessed.I also couldn't take her outside to learn her to potty or for her to exercise because it's winter and it was very cold for her.I was a mess.But as she kinda grew, the crying (kinda) stopped.She has now learned to stay alone and that when i turn those lights off it's bedtime.As for the potty i had no other choice but to force her to go outside.Now she has 50% learned how to potty.I take her outside every 2 hours and she immediately goes,if i don't take her outside she just goes wherever she is.But hey that is major progress.
Also JRT's need a lot of exercise.If you ever want to get a Jack Russel it is very important to really take care of it.You need a strict puppy schedule.This is my schedule for my precious Mickey:
  • I wake up at 7am to feed her(only with healthy special puppy food for JRT's.I feed her with the Royal Canin Jack Russell Terrier and she is very happy.) Then i right away take her outside to do her business.
  • At 10 am i take her outside for her morning exercise.I even bought her a puppy sweater so she can be warm.
  • Until lunch time she just naps on my lap or i take her to her crate if she starts being aggressive
  • At 1pm It's lunch time and I feed her again.Then of course i take her outside to potty again.
  • From lunch time till dinner time at 6pm,i play with her and she takes naps.She empties for the last time after dinner and we play until it's time to sleep.

Most of the time she naps at my lap.
Jack Russell are known for their hunting skills.So yes they can be aggressive.But with good exercise and care they can be tamed,but from a very young age.
After a lot of researching and experimenting I have found that these are the best do/don't advice for Jack Russells:
  1. DON'T ever give in when she whines or cries if left alone.Most of the time when it's not separation anxiety,puppies will only cry just to get your attention and most likely there is nothing wrong with her/him.It is very crucial you teach your puppy that they won't get what they want with crying.For example: When you leave your puppy in it's crate and she/he starts crying.DO NOT even look at the direction of the crate.Show the puppy that you are the leader and that i should listen to you.Of course you do this after you train the puppy to go in the crate and to like the crate.You shouldn't ever force the puppy to do something that they don't want to do.This takes us to number 2;
  2. DON'T force train you puppy! Don't just put a leash on it and drag her with you until the puppy "learns".Or to put her into the new crate and leave the puppy alone for hours.That is abuse.Don't mistake the second point with the first point.You need to be gentle especially with Jack Terriers cause they can be very stubborn if they don't like something.And then when you decide to take it slow and gentle it will probably be to late because you have trained your puppy to actually hate it's crate,or walking on a leash,or whatever.Take slow steps and whenever you see progress praise them with treats!
  3. DO show your Jack Terrier that you are the alpha.This is also very important.If you want your puppy to respect and listen to you,from a very young age you must train it that way.Because most of the time Jack Russell's intend to think that they can dominate you,and if that happens you can never train your puppy right.Because it will have it's own mind and do whatever it wants.And everyone that owns a dog knows that that isn't alright.
  4. DO exercise a lot!! And i mean A LOT.Jack Rusell's are known for being very hyper,and if you don't exercise them they will make a mess around the house.They will go on destructive behavior and no one wants that! Make sure you exercise first thing in the morning so when they go inside they will be tired,satisfied and happy(just like the owner).Then during the day also a 1 hour exercise is necessary and again in the evening a walk around the park or the neighborhood so it will sleep peacefully.
