Today at English class we discussed a certain interesting topic
that is about K.I.P.P.E.R.S,
that stands
for Kids In Parents' Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings.
Basically this
slang refers to adult children that reach a certain age, finish school,
probably get a job but do not move out of their parents' home, instead they
keep on living under their roof and their same rules. There are many factors as
in why these "children" refuse
to fly the nest. Firstly, the most obvious reason is economy. Not everyone can
afford living on their own, so they think the best choice is to live at their
childhood home rather than accumulating debt and struggling to pay it off.
A second
justification is that sometimes some families are very bonded together and the
kids just cannot bear the thought of leaving their families behind.
In my culture kids rarely move out on
their own. If you are an only guy you MUST stay at your father’s house and when
you get married you must bring your bride to yours and your father’s house, where
you will all be living together. However, if there are 2 or more guys in the
family then the house belongs to the youngest one. On the other hand girls are
mostly never allowed to move out if they are not married. Once the girl gets
married then she may leave her father’s house and enter her husband’s and
father in law house. Now of course not all Albanians practice this tradition,
there are a lot of exceptions but it is what it is.
In conclusion as my personal opinion I despise this tradition that
runs in my veins.
I myself would never be a K.I.P.P.E.R because I like to think
myself as an independent individual and I actually like the struggle that comes
with living alone.
